Mind, Self and Consciousness
Expand your mindfulness by exploring Dr. Dan Siegel's "Wheel of Awareness" model.
The Wheel of Awareness is a mindfulness meditation tool using the metaphor of a wheel to represent different aspects of consciousness and awareness.
At the centre of the wheel is the hub, which represents awareness itself - the experience of knowing or being aware.
The rim of the wheel contains four segments representing everything we can be aware of:
The five senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, smell)
Body sensations (hunger, pain, tension, etc.)
Mental activities (thoughts, feelings, memories, beliefs)
Connections to others and the world
As we practice this meditation, we focus our attention on each segment of the rim, one at a time. This builds our capacity to differentiate between awareness (the hub) and what we are aware of (the rim).
The Wheel of Awareness trains our attention to be focused, opens our awareness and kindles an intention to be kind. This metaphorical tool can enhance mental clarity and emotional regulation, and create a deeper connection with ourselves and others.
I would urge you to make time to watch Dr. Dan Siegel’s comprehensive presentation https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y79ktPcWPdc, which includes a meditative exploration of consciousness guided by his Wheel of Awareness model.
He says, ‘The mind happens within the body and between others – and this is energy…’. He offers an answer to ‘What might an integrated identity be?’ and calls us to action to ‘create a compassionate, kind and regenerative world.’
I took time out of my day to watch it and I am so glad I did!
